SIOUX FALLS POST 15  THE AMERICAN LEGION    DATE:    May 4, 2010

REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING  Attendance:  35

The Regular Meeting of the members of Sioux Falls Post 15, The American Legion was called to order by Commander Pansch.

Colors were advanced by Sgt At Arms, Bierle.  Invocation was given by Chaplain Wahlert.  Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Constitution were recited by members.

Guests: Bill Huntimer, candidate for State Sgt At Arms.

The Adjutant read the minutes of the last Business meeting and the Executive Board meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

AMERICANISM:  Boy Staters leave May 31st- need workers.  June 3rd is American Legion Day at Boys State.

ATHLETIC:   Hit Club letters will be out soon.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS:  Check lounge report.

CHILD WELFARE: No report

CHORUS:  April sang at Sunnycrest, Vets Home in Luverne, Good Sams, Dow Rummel

May at Trail Ridge and for National Commanders visit.

 

GO GETTERS: 1580 members – End of year awards given out.

GRAVE MARKERS: Flags will be put out May 29th   at Woodlawn- need workers.

HISTORIAN:  No report

JUDGE ADVOCATE: Talked to him on the phone.

LEGISLATIVE:   No report

LEGION RIDERS: Went to Brandon Loyalty Day.  Will meet National Commander, will post colors Memorial Day.

LOUNGE:  Replaced 25 chairs, bought 3 pool table covers, new grass trimmer, threshold on back door, outdoor plaques donated by Harriet Kelley put up.  Getting bids on parking lot repair, bathrooms and flooring.  July 20th – Twins game.

PAST COMMANDERS CLUB: - Gave money to Boys and Girls State.  All the profits from pancake in June will go to the Honor Flight.  Fund raiser brought up with M1 raffle.  Did one half page ad in baseball book.

SAL:  No report

VA HOSPITAL:  May 5th – Carnival; 10th – National Cmdr visit; 13th- Volunteer luncheon; 15th- Armed Forces Day; 31st- Memorial Day and service of remembrance. 

VAVS:  DAV need van drivers; June 14th at Vets park- New eagle stature.  Drill by ROTC.

VETS COUNCIL:  No report

OLD BUSINESS: None

MINUTES CALLING FOR ACTION:  Motion by Roger and seconded by Hoot to pay for the meal for the Honor Flight.  Motion carried.

NEW BUSINESS:     Free plots at Hills of Rest for Vets.

Motion by Tornow and seconded by Hurska to buy an M1 to Raffle.  Motion carried.

Motion by Wahlert  and seconded by Hoot to give proceeds from June pancake to Honor Flight.  Motion carried.

Send a letter to the Auxiliary notifying them that the profits go to the Honor Flight.

May 10th Brenda at the VA wants the flags put up at 8:00 am – died for lack of action.

Saturday May 8th activation ceremonies at Elmen center.

Bill Huntimer, candidate for  Dept. Sgt at Arm talked.

New Officers were Installed.

CLOSING CEREMONIES:  Members stood in silent reverence of our departed comrades.  Benediction was given by Chaplain Wahlert.  Membership stood in salute as the colors were retired by Sgt at Arms Bierle.

REGULAR BUSINESS MEETING    Attendance:  25

The Acting Adjutant read the minutes of the last Business meeting and the Executive Board meeting.  The minutes were approved as read.

The Financial reports were given by Rames.  Motion by Hoot and seconded by Maag to accept the reports.  Motion carried.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

AMERICANISM:  Lincoln High has 21 boy staters- no report from other schools yet.

ATHLETIC:   Insurance in force- baseballs order has arrived.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS:  Manager Lage reported on hallway renovations with locking bulletin boards.  Will be updating bathrooms.  Need replacement of paper towel dispensers.  Ice damage in northeast corner of building. Tile for flooring with coating to reduce slippage.

CHILD WELFARE: Need volunteer for this position.

CHORUS: Will sing at Birthday Party.

GO GETTERS: Saunders- Discussion of Honor Flight fund raisers- 1555 members to date.

GRAVE MARKERS: No report

HISTORIAN: No report

JUDGE ADVOCATE: No report

LEGISLATIVE:  Senate bill 76 passed on honorable discharge. Senate bill 150 did not pass-deferred to Legislative Research council.

LEGION RIDERS: Fund raiser in Sioux Falls – mostly food sales.

Good meeting at Mid-Winter.  Riders received a Award Plaque for Motorcycle fundraiser.

LOUNGE: February 22 Health Dept inspection – 94% rating – no critical comments.  Refrigerator racks need replacement or improvement.  Lounge change- higher tables similar to game room seating- trial arrangement.  March 14th- Birthday Party; 17th- St Patrick’s Day Party and July 31st –Antique Car show at Post parking lot.

PAST COMMANDERS CLUB: - Next meeting in April.

SAL:  Coming up Dart Tournament and car wash planned.

VA HOSPITAL: No report

VAVS:  March 18- Festival of giving; March 3rd- Hosting a craft show at Vets Hospital- Looking for volunteers

VETS COUNCIL:  Funding is adequate.  Marines social gathering at VFW

OLD BUSINESS: None

MINUTES CALLING FOR ACTION:  None

NEW BUSINESS:  Honor Flight Fund Raiser- Go Getter and Auxiliary are being asked to allow pancake feeds to be used for Honor Flight Funding- ideas for fundraising –wildlife painting lottery; match pancake funds by Post itself; continue Spaghetti feed in April,ect.

Gene Tornow reported Past Commanders will donate half of the June Pancake feed.  Auxiliary will have to donate their half.

Pansch reported we may need Americanism Chairman if Hoot is elected Department Commander.

Twedell reported Post 15 was recognized for sponsorship of  Boy Scouts.

Darwin Wahlert reported Minnehaha County Meeting March 30th at Brandon and District 1 Meeting at Tea on April 25th.
